For the first time, the Nigerian Government has launched a state-of-the-art electronic identity card with multiple functionalities. According to NIMC, the new MasterCard – branded e-ID card is embedded with electronic payment functionalities and it’s available to over 13 million peoples in the country during the pilot phase of distribution.



The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) made the e-ID card possible in collaboration with other corporate partners such as MasterCard (as Payment Tech Providers), Cryptovision (as Trust Service Providers and Public Key Infrastructure), Unified Payments Services (as Payment Processor, Access Bank (as pilot issuing bank). This collaboration brings a robust state-of-the-art identity and financial services to Nigerians.

The front side of the National e-ID card has the following: owners passport photograph with other relevant bio-demographic information such as surname, middle name, first name, date of birth, sex, height, owners signature,  nationality,  age, a unique 16-digits ID number.

Just like other debit or credit cards, the national e-ID card has the magnetic EMV chip. Other features include; crested NIMC logo, expiry date, the document number as well as other security oriented water marks of Nigerian Coat of Arms, and user’s finger prints.

The reverse side of the new National e-ID Card has on it the MasterCard Logo and other details.

The major aim of these details is to prevent duplicate or forgery in the system.      

Functions

The National e-ID card has two broad Functions:
(1) to create a database for all government departments, and
(2) to be used for financial transactions.

By so doing, it will provide the government with easy access to worker’s data irrespective of any department, agency or ministry.

The new e-ID card currently replaces the old National Identity card which was launched over 10 years ago.      

As National Identity

The New National e-ID card is a key component of National-Identity Management System.

Apart from using it as a source of Identity, the new National e-ID card is a source of other social security benefits system which will soon become an all-in-one single, shared service to create an optimised common platform through which Nigerians can easily interact with other various government agencies and parastatals.

The introduction of the new national e-ID card will strengthen effective governance with focus on inclusive citizenship and cashless economy which subsequently stimulate investment and trade as well as economic growth.    

The National e-Id card will also be used as a potential travel documents and border control within Nigeria and other West African Countries.      

It’s embedded with Cryptovision’s biometric identification technology so it can be used for biometric-based verification.

It will be used as prove of identity to all Nigerian from 16 years and above. This means that it can be used as an electronic signature, voting as well as ownership and biometric verification.   

As Payment Processor

The National e-ID card has MasterCard-branded prepaid payment technology. Just like any other MasterCard powered Credit or Debit cards, the card now has extended functionality with the ability to be used to make and receive payments worldwide.

The prepaid payment capability with its identity functionality for this card is a game changer in Nigerian economy because it bridges the most significant barrier of financial inclusion which are prove of identity and quick access to global economy.

The availability of this card implies that the previously under-banked or un-banked populations of the country will now gain unlimited access to the mainstream economy.

Holders of the card will be able to make payment, receive payment and subsequently make their own assets to be visible allowing them to build financial familiarity and improve their credit worthiness with banks and other financial institutions in the country.   

The new National e-ID card will bring banking products services closer to people in the hinterlands who hitherto  never had access. Users will be able to use this card to do several things any ATM dispensing units or Point of Sales (POS).

How to Apply and Collect the new National e-ID Card

Issuance of the new National e-ID card is free. So, if you are up to the age of 16, kindly enrol at any of the NIMC centres nationwide. Upon successful online registration and biometric capture, NIMV will issue you a unique National Identification Number (NIN) and subsequently the new e-ID card.
